The Mayor’s recently-announced plan to close Riker’s Island within 10 years and to disperse its inmate population to new or renovated jails will impact the Brooklyn House of Detention and surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. Council Member Stephen Levin and co-sponsoring organizations, including the BHA, are hosting a Town Hall meeting, at which The Independent Commission on Criminal Justice and Incarceration Reform (Lippman Commission) will discuss their report, A More Just New York City, and their recommendations for closing Rikers and judicial reforms. This will be followed by a Q & A period to hear the concerns of the community.
Please join us at the Belarusian Church, 410 Atlantic Avenue (at Bond St) this Thursday, March 15th, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
If you can’t make it to the Town Hall this week, the Center for Criminal Justice is sponsoring a panel discussion on the subject on March 28th at Brooklyn Law School, 205 State Street. You must RSVP for the panel discussion by March 23.
