As you may have heard, CM Restler has committed to plant 3,400 new street trees in District 33 over the next 4 years. This is wonderful news! The NYC Parks Department has committed to planting 2,200 trees over the next four years. The CM's office will fund an additional 1,200 trees at a cost of at least $2.5 million dollars - to be funded through a combination of his office’s budget allocation and the creation of a District 33 Street Tree Fund. We encourage everyone who is able to donate directly to the Street Tree Fund which will prioritize areas not currently covered by the Parks Department’s existing planting plans. This fund will ensure the planting of as many trees as possible. We're Doing Our Part! Building on our long history of planting and caring for trees in the neighborhood (we planted over 1,000 trees in the 1940's and have added 46 more since) the BHA is partnering with the CM's office and Big Reuse to help improve conditions in the tree pits in our neighborhood. The first opportunity is this Saturday, November 19 from 10:00AM-12:00PM. Meet up location is Hicks Street and Grace Court Alley. Use the button below to sign up! Volunteers will be cleaning any refuse out of tree pits, weeding, cultivating soil with compost, sweeping around tree pits, and watering. It is helpful if you can carry a 20lb Ikea bag with compost, but not essential. Photo credit: Ben Fractenberg/THE CITY |
