BROOKLYN BRIDGE BIKE LANE NYC DOT is implementing bicycle and pedestrian improvements on the Brooklyn Bridge between Tillary Street in Brooklyn and Chambers Street in Manhattan. The project will begin with removing the innermost Manhattan-bound vehicular lane and transforming it into a two-way protected bicycle lane. Currently, pedestrians and cyclists share access to the bridge on the bridge’s promenade. The two-lane promenade, only divided by a painted line, is often overcrowded and can be dangerous for both cyclists and pedestrians. As readers with vehicles may have already noticed, right turns from westbound Tillary Street onto the bridge are no longer permitted. During construction, Manhattan-bound vehicles can still access the bridge from Adams Street and Sands Street. Construction is on track to be finished by this fall. The BHA recognizes the need for greater investment in bicycle-friendly infrastructure in NYC including the bridges. We understand that this will create a temporary disruption for motorists, but believe that in the long run it will prove to be a worthy investment. NYC STREETS PLAN--MAKE YOUR OPINION KNOWN! NYC DOT is currently developing the NYC Streets Plan, a five-year transportation plan to improve the safety, accessibility, and quality of the City’s streets for all New Yorkers. What changes or improvements would you like to see on our neighborhood streets?
Every New Yorker has the opportunity to tell DOT what the City should focus on (e.g. safety, accessibility, more pedestrianization) by completing the survey and/or participating in a Streets Plan workshop. The online workshop for our community district is Wednesday July 7th, from 8:30am-10:30am. Register here.
