Memorial Service Tonight
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The Brooklyn Heights Interfaith Clergy Association’s annual September 11th Memorial Service on the Promenade will begin at 7:15 am near the Montague Street entrance.
We understand this is also the first night of Rosh Hashana so there may not be Jewish clergy members present.
Support for Local Firehouses and Tunnel to Towers

On this 25th anniversary of 9/11, I’m raising funds to buy gravesite wreaths in honor of the eight members of Engine Company 205/Ladder Company 118 (on Middagh Street) who lost their lives that day. Every year, the firefighters from their firehouse place flowers at their graves, honoring their memory and sacrifice.
Last September, Estela Johannesen, owner of James Weir Floral, mentioned to me that she was making the wreaths and that the firefighters were collecting money among themselves to pay for them. The flowers cost approximately $600–$850 each year, an expense the firefighters have traditionally covered themselves. (Estela has generously given them a discount.) Last year, I asked you to help cover that cost as a small way to support our firehouse. Many of you generously contributed, and we met our goal. The firefighters were incredibly grateful.
Engine 205/Ladder 118 has protected our neighborhood for generations, and on 9/11, its members answered the call without hesitation. Eight of them never came home. Twenty-five years later, the firefighters at both of our neighborhood firehouses continue to show up every day, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.
Any surplus funds will go toward next year’s flowers and related efforts supporting firefighters and their families, including T2T (Tunnel to Towers). While Engine 224 (on Hicks Street) responded but did not lose any members on 9/11, we’d like to thank them for their service, too, by providing their firehouse with a floral arrangement on the anniversary.
