Ways to Support the Community Fridge

If you walked past 125 Henry Street last Sunday, you would have seen balloons, sandwich making and lots of energy as the new Community Fridge was officially inaugurated into its new home. We are thrilled that Zion Lutheran Church and Christ the King Church have agreed to host the new fridge and we are glad the BHA was able to play a role in that transition. In case you missed the party, check out this story which ran on PIX Channel 11 news.

Now, it's time to support fridge and ensure it remains a useful resource in our community.

Make Sandwiches! On Wednesday, June 10th from 1-2pm, volunteers will prepare, wrap, label and deliver over 100 sandwiches to the Community Fridge. The food prep will take place in our conference room - 55 Pierrepont Street, 2nd floor. In order to cover the cost of supplies, we are asking all registrants to make a $10 donation to the BHA for this event. Due to limited space, this event is capped at 12 people, so if you'd like to join, please sign up today!

Help Clean the Fridge! As a partner in the Community Fridge, the BHA has committed to clean the fridge every Monday morning. We have many open slots beginning Monday, June 15th. Please help us out and sign up for slot. It's a great way to kick-off your week by giving back to the community and will only take 15 minutes of your time.

Registration is Open for the BHA Dog Show

The BHA Dog Show is back next Sunday, June 14th beginning at 1pm.

The categories are Best Trick, Looks Most Like Owner, Most Adorable Perfect Sized Pal, Most Adorable Gentle Giant, Best Ol' Pal and Cutest New Resident.

Entry fee is $20 per dog and we ask that you only register for 1 category so that as many pups as possible can participate. Spots are limited, so sign up soon!

Volunteers needed to help set up the event, and to check-in contestants. If you are interested, please email us!

Proceeds from the event will be donated to PAWS NY.

Young Professionals Summer Rooftop Party

BHA After Hours is hosting its first event of this warm-weather season.

Geared toward young professionals looking to meet neighbors and make connections, the first gathering of the summer will take place on the Watermark rooftop on June 12 at 6:00pm. Enjoy drinks, snacks, great company, and stunning views.

Only 30 tickets are available, so don’t wait to get yours. BHA members pay $25, non-members pay $35. Buy your ticket here.

BHA Tree Team Educates the Community

Thank you to the BHA Tree Team who came out to Montague Open Streets this past Sunday to share their knowledge on street tree care! It was a lovely intergenerational afternoon of Brooklyn Heights residents who care deeply about the health of our beloved trees.

Now that the weather is warming up, please remember to water your street tree.

Young/Newly Planted Trees: Require 15–20 gallons weekly during the May-to-October growing season. During extreme heat, you can water them 2–3 times a week.
Mature Trees: Need 8–10 gallons weekly to survive harsh urban conditions

Remember: Street trees are not cared for by NYC Parks. They are our collective responsibility to keep healthy and thriving.

Street Closure Alert

On Friday, June 5th, Columbia Heights will be fully closed from Cranberry Street to Middagh Street for milling and paving. Access to residences, Harry Chapin Park and Squibb Park will be maintained at all times during this closure. In preparation for this work and for the completion of joint repair, parking will be removed on June 4th and 5th, although we spotted some of that happening today. This work is dependent on weather and field conditions.

Poplar Street Community Garden Party

Support one of the sweetest little green spaces in our neighborhood. The Poplar Street Community Garden was born in 1994 when local residents, Pete and Sue Eikenberry, started digging up weeds, planting a vegetable garden, and giving this abandoned lot some much needed love.

Now, over 30 years later, the garden hosts workshops, events and educational opportunities and maintains its own behive, thanks to the dedication of neighbors.

Come support the garden and see the magic that has been created in this 2500 square foot triangle-shaped space in the northern edge of Brooklyn Heights.

Take a tour, enjoy refreshments and music, participate in some arts & crafts. Saturday, June 6th from 12-2pm. Enter at 1 Poplar Street.

Strike up a Song in Cadman Park

If you've been in Cadman Park recently, you might have noticed a piano in the area just south of the turf. That isn't an item from our local Facebook Buy Nothing group.

It's part of Sing for Hope's New York City project. In honor of their 25th Anniversary, Sing for Hope has placed 25 artist-designed pianos across the city.

The piano will be on-site through this Sunday, June 7th. We hope you can stop by and, if you're inclined, tickle those ivories for all to enjoy.

New DSNY Trash Bin Requirements

Beginning this week, buildings with 1–9 residential units are required to use the official NYC Bin for garbage collection. However from June 1 - September 7 there will be a warning period, with full fine enforcement pushed back to September 8. Learn more about the program here.

In addition, there will be a public comment on the planned expansion of the Empire Bins program in Community District 2 (that's us!). The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 17 at 9:30am. You can join via livestream here. Learn more about the program and how to submit testimony here.

Shredding Event this Friday

Please be sure to remove all plastic, metal, paper clips, binder clips, rubber bands, household waste, etc. from your papers. Visitors are limited to 2 boxes of paper.
