Thank you for Joining Us at the Annual Meeting

Thank you to all who gathered last Wednesday evening for our 2026 Annual Meeting. It was wonderful to see so many members of our community in attendance as we celebrated our Community Service Award winners, shared our priorities for the year and honored retiring Congressmember Nydia Velazquez (pictured above with our Executive Director Lara Birnback and outgoing Board President Jeremy Lechtzin).

The Congresswoman gave a heartfelt tribute to our neighborhood as she reflected on her years representing Brooklyn Heights, citing the BHA's long history of activism and community organizing as an inspiration during her early years in Congress.

Upcoming Events for Families

Looking for activities to do with your little (and not so little) ones?  The BHA has got you covered with two events in March.
Books and Ice Cream

City Point is hosting a special Stories and Scoops on Saturday March 21st at 10:30am, exclusively for Brooklyn Heights families.

This is a great opportunity to meet other families in the neighborhood!  Start with a special reading at McNaley Jackson Bookstore.  Then head over to Van Leeuwen where each child will receive a free scoop of ice cream!  

Meet in the children's section of McNaley Jackson Bookstore, located inside CityPoint on the 2nd floor.
Spring Egg Hunt 

One of our favorite events of the year, the BHA Egg Hunt, will return next Saturday, March 28th. 

Once again, the hunt will take place at two locations:

Little bunnies 3 years and younger should report to Harry Chapin playground.

Children 4 years and older should head to Pierrepont Playground.

Families with children in both age groups can choose which hunt to attend.

The hunt begins at 10:30 sharp and we ask that all children select two (2) eggs to bring home. 

Volunteers Needed!  The BHA hosts a bake sale at this event. Proceeds from the bakesale help to cover the cost of this and the many other community events we hold throughout the year.  Please support us by signing up to bake or work a one-hour shift at the tables.

Community Fridge Updates:
A New Home has Been Found

As we shared at our annual meeting, we are thrilled to announce that Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church on Henry Street has generously agreed to be the new host of the Brooklyn Heights Community Fridge!

Members of Christ the King Church (who use space in the building), have offered to lead the fridge's care but they will continue to rely on the support of the broader Brooklyn Heights community to keep it operating. 

Friends of the Fridge are working closely with both of these organizations to support the upcoming move.  In the meantime, you can continue to help the fridge by volunteering to fill it and/or clean it. It takes a village to support a community fridge.

Make Sandwhiches to Fill the Fridge 

Our last sandwich making afternoon was so successful that we are doing it again!

Join the BHA and your neighbors during your lunch hour and let's make some sandwiches!  On Thursday, March 26th from 1-2pm, volunteers will prepare, wrap, label and deliver over 100 sandwiches to the Community Fridge.

The food prep will take place in our conference room - 55 Pierrepont Street, 2nd floor

In order to cover the cost of supplies, we are asking all registrants to make a $10 donation to the BHA for this event.  Due to limited space, this event is capped at 10 people, so if you'd like to join, please sign up today!

75 Pierrepont Fire Drive - 
Donations & Volunteers Needed
As we announced at our meeting last week, volunteers have organized a donation drive this weekend to support residents impacted by the fire at 75 Pierrepont Street, which occurred back in January.
 
Drop-off Day is this Friday, March 20. Donations and volunteers are still needed:
 

DONATE ITEMS:

What to donate:

  • Furniture (sofas/couches, bed frames, nightstands, dressers, desks)
  • Cleaning supplies (all-purpose cleaners, disinfectant, sponges, rags, brooms, dustpans)
  • Hangers — families need dozens
  • Organizational items (storage bins, hooks, shelving, shoe racks)
  • Small kitchen tools (spatulas, wooden spoons, measuring cups, can openers)
  • Vacuum cleaners

Items should be new to gently-used.  Please do not bring items you would not want to use yourself.

How to donate:

Option 1: Free Pickup Friday

  • Register by 2PM Thursday (today!) at www.brooklynheights.care
  • Clutter, our event sponsor, will pick up Friday (afternoon pickup slots preferred if possible)

Option 2: Drop Off Friday

  • 9 AM – 7 PM at 86 Cranberry Street (Plymouth Church, Hillis Hall rear entrance)
  • Registration preferred but optional at www.brooklynheights.care

VOLUNTEER::

Volunteers are needed for two critical shifts:

Friday, March 20 • 4–7 PM — Direct incoming donations and manage student volunteers, ensuring items are in useable condition and logically organized by category for families to browse on Sunday.

Sunday, March 22 • 3–5 PM — Label and organize claimed items for moving and storage and remaining items for charity.

Hotel Bossert Update

The long-promised renovation of the Hotel Bossert is finally starting! SomeraRoad, the new owners, are converting the building into a condominium that will have about 60-70 units. In some exciting news, there will be a new restaurant on the ground floor. SomeraRoad has told us they are in talks with some very accomplished restauranteurs. We can't wait to see how this turns out!

The first phase of the project kicked off yesterday. The old scaffolding is being replaced with a newer, more attractive sidewalk shed so that facade repairs can begin. Interior demolition on the conversion will start in April or May, with exterior restoration and renovation scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of this year.

Rally for our Parks

Join New Yorkers for Parks and the Play Fair for Parks Coalition to rally for a fully funded parks system this Monday, March 23rd at 10:30am on the steps of City Hall!
