On January 5th, a devastating fire tore through 75 Pierrepont Street, destroying apartments, displacing families, and leaving all 37 homes contaminated by toxic smoke. While we are deeply grateful that all of our neighbors survived, a few people were injured, including one firefighter, and some beloved pets were lost. Every household has been impacted.
Our neighbors who call 75 Pierrepont home are the people who make Brooklyn Heights feel like Brooklyn Heights. They are families with young children, seniors on fixed incomes, longtime residents, who have lived there since the 1960s, and people you see every day walking their dogs, shopping at the grocery store, and strolling the Promenade. Many residents work right here in the neighborhood. A few of the impacted households include people with disabilities and/or serious medical conditions.
The Brooklyn Heights Association is collecting donations through January 25th to support the victims of the fire.
Your financial donations will go directly toward helping households meet their most urgent needs - clothing, food, medications, temporary housing, and basic daily necessities. Every impacted household will receive baseline support, with additional funds directed to those facing the greatest hardship.
Besides a monetary contribution, there are other ways you can help:
- Donate clothing and furniture - there are a wide variety of needs, from diapers, to coats, to bedding, to kitchen supplies, to appliances.
- Furnished housing leads - 1-6 months, month-to-month especially helpful; needs vary based on pets and accessibility.
- Storage space - free preferred, discounted welcome; 1–6 months.
- Sorting and moving - Volunteers to help with sorting and salvaging belongings, moving, deliveries, and coordination.
If you can provide any of this support, please fill out this google form so your generosity can be matched with a neighbor in need.
Brooklyn Heights is more than just a place - it’s a community. Moments like this remind us how deeply we rely on one another. Thank you for showing up for our neighbors in their time of need.
