Happy Holidays

Our offices will be closed beginning Monday December 22 and will reopen on Monday, January 5.  We hope to see many of you at the tree lighting ceremony at 5:30pm tonight, which will take place at the end of Montague Street by the entrance to the Promenade.  

We wish our entire community a joyful holiday season and a very happy new year. We are looking forward to sharing a great 2026 with you!
 
Community Fridge Update

Thank you to volunteers from The Service Collective for giving the Brooklyn Heights Community Fridge a little facelift.  With some paint, fridge magnets and winter greenery, the fridge is now ready for its new home. 

On that topic, a group of dedicated volunteers have been working to find the fridge a new host.  We will provide more details when they are available.  In the meantime, the Community Fridge will continue to be open at its current location by First Presbyterian Church (124 Henry Street). 

Holidays are an important time to support food insecurity.  If you are able to, please sign up to fill the fridge or clean the fridge.  And remember to follow the fridge on Instagram @brooklynheightscommunityfridge for updates.
 
Meet our Newest Board Members

We are thrilled to announce our final community member recently joining the BHA Board of Governors.

David Solomito joined the BHA’s Public Realm Committee shortly after COVID with a goal of helping to revitalize the neighborhood’s retail and hospitality spaces. During that time, he helped lead the Montague Open Streets initiative, including the annual pickleball tournament. He also played a key role in the Longest Table event, and other urban planning initiatives. David is passionate about supporting local business and attracting new visitors, workers, and entrepreneurs to help the neighborhood thrive.

A graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder with a B.S. in Business Administration, David has held leadership roles across marketing, technology, and hospitality at organizations including Amazon, KAYAK/OpenTable, and the NBA. In addition to joining the BHA Board of Governors, David also serves on the boards of the Montague Street Business Improvement District and The Plymouth Church School Council.

Our annual appeal is in full swing and while we know you are all busy with the holidays, here is your tempting reminder to donate to the BHA. Donations of $250 or more this holiday season, will be gifted this limited edition BHA branded coffee tin from our friends at Brooklyn Roasting Company! 

As you know, we do a lot of work to help make our neighborhood a more vibrant, better connected and sustainable place to live, work and visit.  From leading community events, to nurturing our trees and gardens, to advocating for safe and sustainable solutions to our roadways and all of our public realm - we cover a lot of ground.

In honor of the BHA's 115th Anniversary and the 60th anniversary of our neighborhood's historic district status, please consider donating to the BHA's end of year appeal.

Remember to Shovel your Snow!

After our first, of what looks to be many, snowfalls this season, we are reminding our community to clear your sidewalks of snow and ice (meaning don't be this guy!).  This is important both to keep everyone safe from falls as well as to avoid fines from the Department of Sanitation. 

Here's what you should know:

Snow Clearing Rules

If you own a building or lot, you must clear your sidewalk thoroughly after it snows.

* Clear a path at least 4 feet wide.

* Clear access to the crosswalk and pedestrian ramp (curb cut) if you own a corner property.

* Shovel bus stops and fire hydrants. 

* Spread salt, sand, or other granular material if the ground is frozen.

* Do not shovel snow into the street.

Here is the timeline for removing snow.  If the snow stops falling between:

7 AM and 5 PM, clear the sidewalk within 4 hours

5 PM and 9 PM, clear the sidewalk within 14 hours

9 PM and 7 AM, clear the sidewalk by 11 AM

Congratulations to BHA Member and Brooklyn Heights resident, Andrew Porter.  Andrew submitted our favorite wintry photograph which will be featured on the holiday postcard going out in the mail shortly. If you don't receive a postcard, please email us to be sure we have your address on file.
