Pilates on Montague

If you were walking down Montague Street last Sunday, you might have thought you took a wrong turn into a gym or spa.  Thanks to an Open Streets Wellness Day, residents and visitors alike were able to stretch, lunge and cold plunge on the car-free street. Thank you to all of the local businesses who participated in this day to recharge our bodies and spirits. You can read all the details in this Brooklyn Eagle article.

BHA Halloween Parade

Attention all goblins and ghouls (and pumpkins and ballerinas).  The BHA Halloween Parade is coming up!  Grab your costume and head to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.  The parade will begin at the north end of the promenade on Sunday, October 26th at 11am sharp.

It's Not Your Imagination - Illegal Parking & Placard Abuse are Rampant

Council Member Lincoln Restler and his team recently released a report on illegal parking in Downtown Brooklyn, which found that on an average weekday, there are 457 illegally parked vehicles - many of which are misusing real or fake placards. As we all experience, these illegally parked vehicles block sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and loading zones, making it more dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to get around the neighborhood.

Over the course of their study, only 3% of illegally parked cars were ticketed. The study highlights some immediate steps to address this issue including passing legislation to revoke 60,000 City-issue parking placards, investing in street designs that prevent illegal parking on sidewalks and in bike lanes, and implementing consistent enforcement of all illegal parking. The last element would include passing legislation to allow citizen enforcement of illegally parked cars.

As this problem also greatly impacts us in Brooklyn Heights, we appreciate the CM's efforts to shine a light on just how bad this problem is, and for his work on finding solutions.

Support Universal Daylighting across our City

The BHA has continuously advocated for daylighting, a design practice of keeping corners near intersections clear of parked vehicles to improve visibility between drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. 

A bill introduced by CM Julie Won prohibiting standing or parking a vehicle within 20 feet of a crosswalk is coming up for a vote in City Council.  While it currently has considerable support in the city council, it is helpful for the public to demonstrate support for this initiative that has been proven to save lives.  If you'd like to add your name to this movement, please sign this petition.

Election Day is less than 1 month away and early voting begins Saturday, October 25th.

Make sure you are registered to vote. Applications to register must be completed and received by October 25.  If you need to change your address, be sure to submit a new voter registration application by October 20.

Update on BQE Repairs

Joralemon Construction Updates: NYC DOT started work to repair the BQE on the bridge over Joralemon Street. Work will take place Monday - Friday, 6:00 AM - 3:00 PM, for a period of 6 months. There are traffic impacts to Furman and Joralemon Street. There will be a nighttime single lane closure on the BQE (Queens-bound). There will be a single lane closure on Furman Street during working hours. There will be a single lane and north sidewalk closure on Joralemon Street.

Construction on the Columbia Heights Bridge Over the BQE: The NYC DOT is carrying out interim deck-joint repairs on the Columbia Heights Bridge. Work continues to replace the sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.  Columbia Heights is open to traffic on weekends and during non-construction hours on weekdays from 4pm - 7pm, with access to residences, Squibb Park, and Harry Chapin Park at all times.
