We say this every year, but it really is hard to believe that summer's last days are already here. This will be our last newsletter until after Labor Day. 

We hope everyone was able to enjoy some down time over the last couple of months, whether you took a staycation or traveled to a favorite summer spot. As sad as we are to see summer go, there are lots of great things in store for the fall so stay tuned! 

Volunteer Opportunity: District 33 Back to School Drive

Council Member Lincoln Restler's Office is organizing their annual Back to School Drive and needs assistance to make their distributions serving students at District 33's five highest need schools a success. They are looking for volunteers with vehicles and other folks to help with transport and unloading of supplies and back packs.

Friday, August 22, 1:00pm-3:00pm, Pick up school supplies at Council Member Restler's Office at 410 Atlantic Avenue and Bond and deliver to St. Ann & Holy Trinity at 157 Montague St, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (for sorting)

The 59 Community Boards of NYC are required to prepare an annual Community District Needs ("CD Needs") Statement. These documents identify each Community District's top funding priorities, they are the first step in the annual City budget process.

On Monday August 11th, the BHA joined with other members of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway Environmental Justice Coalition, elected officials, community members and the Stop the Cross Bronx Expansion Coalition to  urge Gov. Hochul and DOT to invest in safe and sustainable transportation alternatives. Advocated called on the Governor not to expand the Cross Bronx with a parallel highway and called for a corridor-wide transformation of the BQE that centers environmental justice, instead of expanding its cantilever section. 

“For decades the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and the Cross-Bronx Expressway have torn through our city, bringing pollution, noise, congestion, traffic violence and filth to the literal doorsteps of hundreds of thousands of people. Today, we’re calling on New York City and New York State to immediately begin a community-led planning process for the future of these decrepit urban highways that prioritizes public health, climate resilience, investments in transit and sustainable freight delivery, and fundamentally puts people first,” said Lara Birnback of the Brooklyn Heights Association.

The final escalator replacement at Cadman Plaza W side of the High St (A/C) station is currently anticipated to begin on or about Monday, August 11^th . This is ahead of schedule!  While the escalator is removed from service, both adjacent escalators will remain in operation. Sections of the platform and mezzanine will be securely barricaded for storage.

Completion of this replacement is currently expected in spring 2026.  There will continue to be street-level activity at the intersection of Cadman Plaza West and Middagh St to support a water pipe installation.
