This year's Fourth of July Celebration in Brooklyn Heights will be unlike those in previous years, with police checkpoints and a closed-off Promenade. Please read the information below to make sure you are informed.
We wish everyone a happy, healthy, and festive 4th!
Here's a summary of what you need to know:
1. The Brooklyn Heights Promenade will be closed to residents and the general public. The city plans to create a viewing area for a selected number of city employees. You can read more about this controversial decision in the Brooklyn Eagle.
2. Beginning at 2pm, many of our local streets will be closed to vehicles and cars will be subject to towing (mainly west of Hicks Street). HERE is a list of street closures and locations where no parking will be enforced.
3. From 2pm onwards, Brooklyn Heights residents and employees must show proof of residency or employment at designated NYPD checkpoints to enter the neighborhood west of Hicks street (essentially from Hicks Street to the waterfront.) NYPD has not provided clear information about what will be acceptable but we believe it will include IDs and/or utility bills with your name and address. Building employees and staff should be prepared to show a letter on letterhead verifying employment from the building management or property owner.
**If you plan to have guests at your home and you reside west of Hicks, you will need to collect them at the checkpoint with your ID. We understand this is onerous - unfortunately, no one from the city asked for the BHA's feedback!**
The Mayor's office has informed the BHA that there will be checkpoints at virtually every cross street on Hicks Street so that residents and employees don't have to wait with everyone else at the checkpoints which have been set up for people entering Brooklyn Bridge Park with tickets for the fireworks show.
3. Montague and Henry Streets will be OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Many of our local businesses are understandably upset about the mobility restrictions in the area and the closing of the Promenade. They rely on the 4th of July crowds to help their businesses through what tends to be a slower season here in Brooklyn Heights. PLEASE show your local favorites some love tomorrow!
4. Some people may have noticed temporary cell phone towers in the Remsen Street cul-de-sac. We are told these have been put in place to ensure that cell service will be uninterrupted in the neighborhood and Brooklyn Bridge Park during the event.
We thank Council Member Restler for working with the city to reduce the footprint of these towers, ensure emergency access to the hydrant, and reduce the hours during which a generator will be used as much as possible. The equipment and fencing will be removed Saturday morning, July 5th.
