Brooklyn Library Mobile - Stop by to meet the Brooklyn Heights Library team and explore the Brooklyn Public Library Bookmobile! Get a library card, check out books, and enjoy free WiFi.

Sign up to Donate Blood at the New York Blood Center Mobile. Many spots are still available from noon until 4:30pm  The NYBC is currently experiencing a blood shortage.  Donate and help save up to three lives.

Plus, street curling, a stilt band, compost giveaway and more!

Brooklyn Museum on Wheels 

The Brooklyn Museum is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025. Did you know that the origins of the museum are right here in Brooklyn Heights? The museum traces its origins back the the Apprentices' Library building which stood at the corner of Henry & Cranberry. On July 4, 1825, a cornerstone ceremony was held which included a visit from none other than General Lafayette! 

Free activities include:

• Wet Felting – Inspired by Melissa Joseph: Tender, visitors can use the wet-felting technique to wrap colorful fabric around a stone.
• Time Capsule – Create a multimedia collage to preserve in a collective time capsule.
• Ask a Librarian – Meet a Brooklyn Museum librarian and explore unique materials like fashion sketches and artist books.
• Touch Tour – Discover select artworks through touch during 15-minute guided sessions (up to 15 participants each).
• Games & Bubbles – Play chalk games, giant Jenga, and cornhole—and don’t miss surprise bubble shows by BubbleMan Stephen Duncan.

Read the full day of activites here and remember, Montague Street will be closed to cars from 10am through 6pm both Sundays.  Please be sure to move your car during Open Streets time. 

In May, real estate developer SomeraRoad  acquired the historic Hotel Bossert on Montague Street with plans to restore the community landmark and reopen it as residences.

The BHA has met with the new owners and will continue to be in close touch with the firm as the project moves forward. We're hopeful that this special building is entering a new and positive phase in its already storied history. 

We are very grateful that SomeraRoad quickly responded to the BHA and Councilmember Restler's requests to deal with the flashing lights that have been both irritating and worrying for neighbors. The company recently confirmed that the flashing lights and the alarms at Hotel Bossert have been safely turned off with the assistance of a fire and alarm company.

More details on the timeline and plans for development are expected to be provided later this year.

This Thursday through the weekend, our borough is filled with events and activities honoring Juneteenth, also called Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, which marks the end of slavery in the United States. Make a plan to attend these free events nearby:

Juneteenth: Brooklyn and the Abolitionist Movement: Thursday, June 19, 11am-12:30pm, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Meet at the Corner of Furman and Old Fulton Streets and join the Urban Park Rangers on a walk discussing Brooklyn's significant history in the abolitionist movement in the United States.

We Outside! A BK Juneteenth: Saturday, June 21, 12-8pm, 300 Ashland Place, Downtown Brooklyn. 651 ARTS presents its annual We Outside! A BK Juneteenth, a commemoration of African-American emancipation, with live music, dance, spoken word, and more.

Here are some more events happening in our borough.

Starting Monday June 16 through Tuesday June 24, NYC DOT will mill portions of the Queens-bound Brooklyn Queens Expressway from Atlantic Avenue to the Brooklyn Bridge.  As a result, only one lane will be available from 11pm to 5am.

Pierrepont between Clinton & Cadman Plaza West will be fully closed to accommodate crane delivery of construction materials beginning June 19 through July 18. Learn more here.

DOT recently announced a plan for changes on Court Street between Schermerhorn to Hamilton Avenue, the most significant of which is the addition of a protected southbound bike lane, which would provide a cycling route from Downtown Brooklyn to Red Hook. DOT plans to implement these changes over the summer.

Adding this bike lane will remove one travel lane for cars and increase the overall safety of the roadway for both pedestrians and cyclists. Between 2022 and 2024, there were 165 reported crashes on the mile-long corridor that caused one death and injured 15 cyclists, 23 pedestrians and 35 drivers. The street is a Vision Zero Priority Corridor due to the number of severe injuries and deaths on the street in the last five years.
