The BHA's Promenade Garden Conservancy is hosting its annual fundraiser on the evening of Tuesday May 6th from 6:30-8:30pm. The Annual Perennial Party celebrates the professional gardeners and neighborhood volunteers of the Promenade Garden Conservancy, and supports the many ways the BHA makes our neighborhood a more beautiful, connected, and sustainable place to live, work, and visit.

Enjoy wine and nibbles, and entertainment generously provided by the talented Tom Stewart and Maureen Kelley Stewart, who will be performing a collection of nostalgic and quirky Brooklyn-centric songs.

Earlier this week six of the current mayoral candidates participated in a joint forum on preservation issues. The BHA was among the co-sponsors of the event, which offered some illuminating insights into the candidates’ backgrounds, experiences, priorities, and positions.

On April 19, the Empire State Building will be lit in the colors of the NYC Flag to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the passage of the NYC landmarks law. That law, which created the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and ushered in an era of historic preservation, has helped our city retain its unique historic diversity. And as many of you know, Brooklyn Heights was designated the very first historic district in NYC on November 23, 1965.

You can, in fact, install solar panels on a building in a historic district! The Landmark Preservation Commission has put together this helpful fact sheet to you get started.

Regardless of landmark status or your interest in installing solar panels, buildings over 25,000 square feet must cut emissions by 2050.  Interested in learning more? Consider attending the Sustainable Building Resource Fair on April 29th (see details below).

The Sustainable Building Resource Fair will connect you with experts and experienced contractors who can kickstart your building's sustainability upgrade.

This event is for buildings of all sizes whether you are looking to decarbonize a small brownstone or undertake major upgrades on a large building to be compliant with Local Law 97.  Explore over 45 exhibits, learn about heat pumps, solar, HVAC, lighting, renewable energy, green infrastructure, and waste management for your building, as well as monetary incentives, financing, and tax credits to help you do the work. Register.

The event is co-sponsored by Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Council Member Lincoln Restler.

Rat Migitation:  Last week, some of our volunteers with the Promenade Garden Conservancy met with NYC Parks to identity and problem-solve the rat issues along our beautiful walkway.

The group put a plan of action together including more thorough cleaning of the Citibins to rid the containers of any odors, replacing missing magnets on trash cans to keep them shut, and tracking/managing rat burrows to keep the rat population at bay.

YOU CAN HELP! Did you know that dog urine will rust the trash cans making it easier for rats to enter? Please curb your dog and avoid them damaging our trash bins. Rats like to eat dog poop (yuck!) so please ALWAYS pick up after your dog. It takes a village to fight the rats.

The Gardeners Return!  Now that it is officially spring, our volunteer gardeners are back in action on Tuesday mornings. This week they will be be doing a spring cleanup of the gardens along the Promenade including cutback of perennial stems and grasses, cleaning under the benches, and litter removal in the beds. If you see them hard at work, please say hello and thank them!

The BHA's much loved annual Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, April 12th at 10:30am SHARP!
