The next series of BQE public meetings, held jointly with NYCDOT, NYSDOT, and Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), will take place the second week of December.

The three agencies are preparing to initiate an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the BQE Central Project this spring. The meetings will each provide an overview of the needs, purpose, and objectives of the BQE Central Project and outline the next steps towards environmental review. The meetings will take place as follows:

Tuesday, December 10th at 6:30 PM (in-person at City Tech Cafeteria, 300 Jay Street)

Wednesday, December 11th at 10:30 AM (virtual)

Thursday, December 12th at 6:30 PM (virtual)

A representative from NYC DOT has told the BHA that all of the concepts presented to the public for the reconstruction of the triple cantilever and the broader BQE Central area are still "on the table." These upcoming meetings are meant to help the public understand the NEPA process and offer an opportunity to provide feedback on the project's purpose, need, and objectives - a requirement of the federal process. 

The BHA's position has not changed. We continue to urge the city, state, and federal authorities to prioritize short to medium term repair of the triple cantilever to ensure its safety, while simultaneously initiating a long-term planning process for the future of the entire BQE corridor which prioritizes climate resilience, reduces truck traffic and vehicle miles traveled, and opens up the possibility for new green space, housing, and community & economic development.

PS 8 New Open Street on Poplar

The DOT has announced a new, 1-block Schools-type Open Street on Poplar Street between Hicks & Henry.  This block will be used by students at PS8 while the school's playground is under renovation. The road will be closed weekdays from 9:15am-3pm. Impacted residents may submit comments, questions, and suggestions to bk02@cb.nyc.gov by Friday, November 22nd.
 
Meet our New Board Members

Spencer Compton is one of four new Governors to recently join the BHA. 

Spencer is a third generation New Yorker who has lived in Brooklyn Heights with his wife and children since 1999. A graduate of NYU and Brooklyn Law School, Spencer worked for a decade in the independent film business and then practiced for a decade in large New York law firms, specializing in commercial leasing and real estate finance. He is currently a Senior Vice-President and Senior Counsel at Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company. Spencer recently served as the Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Real Property Law Section. He has served as a president and a treasurer on co-op boards in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. He regularly publishes articles relating to real estate law and is a frequent CLE lecturer.

In his free time, Spencer writes novels and often can be found working in the Fermob lounge chairs in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Turkey Trot and More with the
Brooklyn Heights Run Club

The BK Heights Run Club is a group of casual runners who have regular meet ups for runners of all interests and abilities.  Their purpose is to focus both on exercise and community.

The group meets twice during the week and on Sunday mornings, each for a three mile run.  Here is where you can find them:

SUNSET RUNS (or really post-sunset this time of year - weekdays)

9AM • meet at  PIER 5 Brooklyn Bridge Park Soccer Fields, 334 Furman Street. This run is paced as follows (8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30 min/mile).  

Turkey Trot!  Need to burn off some Thanksgiving pounds?  Join them Friday, November 29th @ 9am for a Brooklyn Turkey Trot.  While most runs are in Brooklyn Heights, this one is meeting at Grand Army Plaza for a 1 loop run through Prospect Park followed by coffee at a local spot.

The Service Collective has organized many Thanksgiving-related volunteer projects over the next week including a pie drive, prepping and delivering Thanksgiving meals to homebound adults and serving a Thanksgiving meal at a local soup kitchen. Check out all of the options. BBP Temporary Pier 1 Closure this Week

Prior to reopening the Pier 1 entrance of Brooklyn Bridge Park, a portion of Pier 1 will  be closed from Tuesday 11/19 through Thursday 11/21. This closure includes the Park’s main entrance at Old Fulton and Furman Streets. All access between the Park’s southern piers 2-6 and the northern Dumbo sections of the Park will be via the 1 Hotel breezeway and the Furman Street sidewalk. See the above photo for pedestrian re-routing. On Friday, November 22, BBP’s contractor will be repaving the portion of Furman Street directly in front of the Pier 1 construction site (outlined in red above). This work will NOT require a full closure of Furman Street, just brief holds to traffic. Work will be performed lane by lane with flaggers directing traffic.
 
MTA Capital Plan Open House

The MTA is hosting an Open House on its 2025–2029 Capital Plan at Brooklyn Borough Hall (209 Joralemon Street) on Thursday, November 21 from 4-7pm.

The State Legislature is charged with approving a five year capital plan next year that will determine what new station improvements, signal upgrades, accessibility enhancements and other projects get funded. Members of the public are encouraged to attend the open house to learn more about the capital plan, share your input, and speak with MTA leadership.
