As we've reported, the BHA is part of a group of civic and business groups along with local elected officials advocating for measures to slow down speeding vehicles on Atlantic Avenue. 

We are very happy to celebrate the recent installation of two new mid-block crossings between Henry and Clinton and between Clinton and Court. These new crossings and lights in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill complement the additional crossings already in place between Hoyt and Bond and Bond and Nevins Streets.

These new crossing shorten overly long blocks and dramatically reduce speeding. They are also a boon for our local business community as they make it easier for shoppers to cross the street. Thank you to all who worked hard to implement these changes.  We will continue to advocate for additional measures to further improve street safety on this heavily-used corridor.

Introducing new BHA Governor Laura Trevelyan!

Laura has lived in Brooklyn Heights since moving here from the UK in 2004. She and her husband James Goldston raised their three sons in the neighborhood. 

Laura anchored the BBC’s Emmy award winning newscast World News America on PBS for more than ten years, covering national and international stories from the studio in Washington DC, and anchoring on location in the US and from around the world. Laura has reported for the BBC from across the globe. She’s an Honorary Associate Fellow at the PJ Patterson Institute for Africa Caribbean Advocacy at The University of the West Indies and a Trustee of the Trevelyan Grenada Reparations Fund. Laura left BBC News in March 2023 following her family’s historic trip to Grenada in February 2023 where she led the Trevelyans’ public apology to the Grenadian people for the role of their ancestors in enslaving Africans on the island.  

Laura is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations also serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Kindergarten Society, CitySquash, and the Royal Oak Foundation. Welcome to the BHA Board Laura!

We know that many buildings in Brooklyn Heights have a trash enclosure made by CITIBIN.

If you’re an existing or legacy CITIBIN customer, you might wonder if your current trash enclosure meets the new city standards. 

If you have a Small CITIBIN, your bin is shorter and shallower than the new NYC Bin requirements.  Here are your options:

(1) "Upgrade" to a Medium CITIBIN which will comfortably fit the new 35-45 gallon NYC Bins for residential buildings. This is the right size for you if you own or manage a property with 1-9 units. CITIBIN is offering discounts to existing clients with Small who want to upgrade to Medium.

(2) Stick with your Small CITIBIN and purchase their new retrofit kit, which essentially turns your Small into a Medium. If you have accessory modules such as a package locker and planters, those can be retrofitted, too. Retrofits are $300 per module + installation. Brooklyn Gives on GivingTuesday is Brooklyn Org's annual crowdfunding campaign, uniting donors and nonprofits across our borough in support of social change on GivingTuesday, the year’s biggest day of giving, taking place this December 3rd.

There are two ways to support non-profits via this campaign. One is to donate money. The other is to create a fundraising team, which is a great way to build community and let others in your network know about the organizations you are passionate about. Simply visit Brooklyn Org and search for an organization's name to get started.

We are asking you to please support the Brooklyn Heights Association this year. The BHA works hard on a wide range of initiatives that focus on improving the quality of life in Brooklyn Heights and beyond, such as climate-forward advocacy (think BQE!), street safety measures (like Atlantic Ave), small business support (Montague Open Streets and Neighborhood Partners) and community engagement (Halloween Parade, Day of Service, Street Tree care, etc.)  

In addition, the BHA supports many other groups in our neighborhood by increasing their awareness, collecting needed items on their behalf, promoting their fundraising & public events and even managing some of their administrative hurdles so that they can focus on the work at hand. 

Please consider supporting the BHA as well as many other Brooklyn-based organizations that we partner with, including Brooklyn Book Bodega, Little Essentials, Read 718 and Big Reuse.  We are encouraging more local organizations to join the Brooklyn.org campaign and will keep you informed as they sign up.
