We had a blast at our annual Halloween Parade and, as always, were amazed by all of the creative costumes we saw on the Promenade. This is one of our favorite days of the year because it brings out so many smiles across our community. Special thanks to those who provided treats and worked at the bake sale table, and to Treasure Trunk Theater for being our first-ever parade leaders.

Montague Open Streets wrapped up for the season with a Halloween Spooktacular.  The blocks were filled with pumpkins, costumed dogs and lots of fall fun.  Thank you to all the businesses who welcomed trick or treaters on Sunday!

We love being part of this program in partnership with the Montague Business Improvement District and the Department of Transportation.  We will keep you posted when we have a plan for the return of Open Streets in spring 2025.

New York City hasn't seen rain in over a month and this takes a toll on our neighborhood trees.  During times of drought, the trees are very thirsty.  If at all possible, please make sure the tree on your sidewalk are watered.  The best time to water is early morning to avoid evaporation.  Here are some tips from NYC Parks:

- Using a hand cultivator, loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil to alleviate compaction and help the water and air reach the roots.
- Water slowly so the water penetrates the soil and does not run off of the surface.
- Water at the soil level, not the leaves of shrubs and groundcovers.
- Apply a three-inch layer of mulch, preferably shredded bark, to the tree pit. Mulch keeps the water from evaporating quickly, reduces soil compaction, and improves the soil as it breaks down. Do not pile the mulch against the trunk of the tree or shrub; water will accumulate and rot the trunk.

We hope all the little ghosts and goblins have a great time trick-or-treating tomorrow on Halloween.  Brooklyn Heights is a pretty magical place this time of year. The weather will be (eerily) beautiful and we look forward to seeing everyone enjoying our beautiful neighborhood in all it's spookiness.  And a reminder, if you have leftover candy after tomorrow, please consider donating it per below.

As a reminder, The NYCDOT will continue to close two lanes on the Staten Island-bound BQE from Adams Street to Washington Street from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. until November 29th. During the right lane closure, the Sands Street entrance ramp will also be closed. These Staten Island-bound lane closures are required for the installation of weigh-in-motion (WIM) equipment along this section of the roadway. Please attached notice.
