Montague Open Streets Celebrating Our Canine Pals
 

We had an amazing afternoon on Sunday at the BHA Dog Show.  With over 110 contestants in 6 categories, the crowd went wild as local dogs competed for Best Tail, Best Ears, Best Trick, Looks Most Like Owner and Most Adorable (up to and over 50 pounds). The event raised $1635 for a very special nonprofit serving pets and their people, PawsNY.

In addition to the dog show, Montague Street was filled with tons of activities for our canine friends, from an agility course, doggie pools, to lots of tables filled with people who care for our dogs in different ways. Days like this make us so grateful to be part of the wonderful Brooklyn Heights community!

Celebrate 170 Years with the
Brooklyn Women's Exchange

The Brooklyn Women’s Exchange is commemorating 170 years of championing and empowering independent artisans from Brooklyn and beyond.

To honor this significant milestone, the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange will host its 170th Anniversary Benefit on Monday, June 3, at Saint Ann’s Parish Hall in Brooklyn Heights. The event will begin at 6:00PM and include wine, hors d'oeuvres and FUN!

Smoke Shop at 64 Henry Street 

As of the writing of this newsletter, the "Exotic" smoke shop at 64 Henry is closed. Unfortunately, many of these rogue shops across the city have been able to exploit loopholes and other challenges to the regulatory and enforcement capabilities of law enforcement and have re-opened just as quickly as they are closed. 

The BHA has been working for months with our elected officials at the local and state level to flag this location as problematic, and to make sure it stays at the top of the list for law enforcement. 

We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved to ensure these bad actors cannot operate with impunity. See the Brooklyn Eagle coverage of the most recent shut down. 
 
BQE Weekend Closure June 1-3

There will be another BQE weekend closure from 2AM Saturday, June 1st until 4AM Monday, June 3rd for all lanes of the Queens-bound BQE from Atlantic to Sands. The Department of Transportation is performing necessary interim repairs. DOT has a detour plan in effect.  Please plan accordingly.
 
Volunteer to Help a Child Read

Looking for a volunteer opportunity this summer? READ 718 is a Brooklyn-based literacy organization that pairs local students with trained volunteers to support reading goals in one-to-one tutoring sessions. The summer program begins July 8th with opportunities to volunteer both in-person (at their 420 Atlantic Avenue location) and remote. You can learn more and submit a Volunteer Application.
