Thank You to All of Our Volunteers

Thank you to everyone who joined our Spring into Service event last Saturday!

We had a record six projects happening across the neighborhood - cleaning up our local dog park, building furniture for asylum seekers, organizing books and assembling furniture at our local elementary school, taking care of our neighborhood trees, filling our community fridge AND collecting books and children’s supplies for families across NYC. Your contributions helped make our neighborhood a better place.

A special thank you to our project leaders for making this day such a success! They include Friends of HIllside Dog Park, Amanda Jones (Executive Director, The Service Collective), Jennifer LaRusso (Co-President, PTA of PS8), CM Lincoln Restler and Channa Camins, District 33 Director of Strategic Initiatives, Gil Lopez (Big Reuse), Nancy Nayar (who organized the Community Fridge project) and all the volunteers who showed up at each project to dig, hammer, organize and clean. These aren’t glamorous jobs, but they are important ones to support our neighborhood and the larger Brooklyn community.

Open Streets Returns on Sunday!

We are so excited to welcome back Open Streets, presented by the Montague Street Business Improvement District. Programming will begin this Sunday, May 12th and continue through Sunday June 30th before returning in the fall.

Before we get to the fun, we need your help.

Montague Street between Clinton Street and Hicks Street will be closed to cars and parking beginning at 10AM on Sunday. This means that all cars parked on those blocks need to be moved by 10AM. There is a possibility you car will be towed if it is parked there on Sunday.

We realize that parking meters are not in effect on Sunday and understand that this may cause an inconvenience for those who like to use those blocks to park. We greatly appreciate you moving your car so that we can make these days enjoyable for everyone. Now, on to the fun!

This Sunday, Open Streets kicks off with a celebration of mothers (and anyone who plays a caretaking role.) Stop by Kiehl’s for a facial event, pick up free gifts for all “moms” at the Montague BID tent (while supplies last), enjoy a free mini cup of ice cream at Haagen Dazs, visit the Orange Theory Fitness table and get a free week of classes! At 1:30pm, challenge your balance at a trial ballet class. Then sit back and enjoy a professional performance by the Brooklyn Ballet. Activities will run through 5pm; look at the full line-up here. It will be a great day on Montague and we hope to see you out there!

Calling All Dog Lovers

Be sure to bring your four-legged friends to Montague Street next Sunday, May 19th, as Open Streets is going to the dogs!

Are you ready for the BHA Dog Show? It promises to be an event to remember with six categories of competition, a runway to strut your stuff and prize baskets for the winners!

Have you registered your dog to compete? Registration is $15/category and each category is capped at 25 dogs. All proceeds which will be donated to PawsNY.

This canine event will take place on Montague Street between Hicks and Henry beginning at 1:30pm.

Elizabeth Gloucester

Wednesday May 22nd at 6:30pm

Join the BHA and The Center for Brooklyn History for a talk with New York Times editorial board member Brent Staples and historian and scholar Prithi Kanakamedala, moderated by Dominique Jean-Louis, CBH’s Chief Historian.

The evening will focus on Elizabeth Gloucester, a woman born into slavery in Richmond, Virginia and who, upon her death, was described by the Brooklyn Eagle as “the wealthiest colored woman in the United States.” Learn about her ties to Brooklyn Heights, including presiding over Remsen House, formerly located at the corner of Resent and Clinton streets and described by Mr. Staples as "the jewel of the real estate portfolio she had established when she was a struggling young shopkeeper in bare-knuckled Lower Manhattan."

We are so excited to bring this engaging panel and fascinating topic to our community!

Learn More and Register

Take a walk down Atlantic Avenue on May 18th and enjoy the first ever Atlantic Avenue Day of Design. Sponsored by the Atlantic Avenue BID, the event is part of the NYCxDESIGN Festival , an annual citywide celebration featuring hundreds of design events, from exhibits and trade shows to talks and tours. Attendees can visit participating businesses for workshops, meet designers, and hear from experts in the design field.

There are many Brooklyn Heights design stores participating, including Alao, Salter House and Antik (owned by Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse participant Jenna Chused). See the map for all participants.

Nope, Not Yet! MTA Update on High Street

The Cadman Plaza West entrance/exit to the High Street A/C station will continue to be closed until arly Summer 2024. The project is continuing to replace two of the escalators at this side of the station, as well as continuing work at the mezzanine level to support the escalators’ operation at the station.

The overall project is still scheduled for completion in Summer 2024, when the new escalators will be available for customer usage.

Sunday, May 12th - Montague Open Streets Begins. Activities run from 12pm-5pm. See the current lineup of activities on the Montague BID website.

Wednesday, May 15th - CB2 Land Use Meeting. 6pm. 350 Jay St / 8th Floor Conference Room. The Department of City Planning will present a full overview of the City of Yes Housing Opportunity in advance of the public hearing on 5/29.

Saturday, May 18th - Shred Fest. 9am-12pm. Borough Hall Greenmarket. Bring your sensitive documents to get shredded. Limit 3 boxes per person.

Saturday, May 18th - Willowtown Spring Fair 12pm-5pm on Willow Place. Games, bake sale and live performances.

Saturday, May 18th - Spring Festival at Brooklyn Bridge Park. 11am-5pm. Pier 5. Kite Flying fun
