Thank You for Attending our Annual Meeting

A huge thank you to to everyone who came out to the BHA's annual meeting or watched via livestream this past Monday night! We're especially grateful to our host, the First Unitarian Congregational Society and to our guest speaker, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

As many of you have likely read or heard by now, this year's meeting was interrupted by a number of protestors who prevented the Senator from addressing the meeting as planned. We are in touch with the Senator's team and are working on finding another opportunity for her to share her views on issues like transportation & the BQE, New York City's housing crisis, climate and sustainability, and more. 

The BHA's annual meeting has always been free and open to the public, accessible to BHA members and non-members, Brooklyn Heights residents and non-residents alike. This is an important tradition, and we plan to continue it.

Once the Senator departed the event we continued with the business of giving out Community Service Awards to highlight the great work of the Brooklyn Public Library and the Service Collective. And three lucky audience members won generous gift cards from local business heroes Joe Coffee, Poppy's and Dellarocco's.

Street Lights in Brooklyn Heights

Over the past month or so, work has been ongoing to fix or replace corroded bases on street lamps throughout the neighborhood. This is part of a citywide effort to replace light pole bases for both decorative and non-decorative lights. 

DOT tells the BHA that the turnaround time to replace the poles is typically 1-3 weeks depending on the condition of the light pole. To become operational again can take longer in certain cases if Con Ed has additional issues. 

 

What's Happening with the Bishop's Crook Poles? 

As reported during our Annual Meeting, DOT is at work on a new citywide decorative contract which includes more Bishop Crook light poles in Brooklyn Heights. The contract is still awaiting registration with the city, and once that happens, the contractor will need to purchase and manufacture the poles. DOT estimates that 2025 is the earliest that work in Brooklyn Heights will begin.
 
Volunteers Needed for our Egg Hunt

Our annual Egg Hunt will take place on Saturday, March 30th at 10am at Pierrepont Playground. 

Volunteers needed to bake: Sign up here to bring some delicious treats for our bakesale.  Proceeds go to support activities run by the BHA Playground Committee.

Volunteers needed to stuff: We will be hosting a "Stuff the Eggs" gathering at our office on March 21st from 4:30-5:30pm.  This event is appropriate for kids 7+ (and their guardian). We can accommodate up to 20 people so if you'd like to come help prep for the hunt, please sign up here 
 
New Stop Sign on Hicks Street

Another pedestrian safety measure has been added to our neighborhood, thanks to the placement of a stop sign at the intersection of Hicks and Orange Streets. Thank you to the DOT for continuing to work to make our streets safer.
 
Temporary Closure: High Street Subway Entrance  

The next phase of the High Street A C station escalator replacement project is beginning. 

In order to keep passengers safe from construction, the Cadman Plaza West side of the station will be closed and unavailable for customer usage from March 18th until the end of April 2024. 

During this time, the station will still be open for subway service, but all access to the station will be provided at the Adams Street side of the station. Signage will be posted at the station in advance of this phase.

The full project is still on track to be completed in early Summer 2024.
 
Nominate a Community "Mom" or "Dad"

Do you know someone who provides inspiration and support to families in an NYC community?

The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invites you to nominate a "Community Mom" or “Community Dad” for this award.

Your nomination could be a volunteer, a teacher, a caregiver, an essential worker - anyone who you feel dedicates their time and energy to taking care of the people in our city.

Nominations are due by March 13th.  
 
BPL Teen Writing Contest

Brooklyn Public Library's Teen Writing Contest is a chance for local teens to showcase their work.

All teen writers from New York City, grades 6-12, are invited to submit their poetry and prose to be judged by a panel of BPL's expert young adult librarians for creativity, style and voice.

Winners in poetry and prose will receive the Ned Vizzini Teen Writing Prize with cash awards, have their pieces published in the Teen Writing Journal distributed by the Library, and be honored at a reception in June.

Submissions are due by March 31st.  Read more about the contest and about Ned Vizzini here.

Wednesday, March 20th, 6:30pm - Join The Moth for a special storytelling event at Saint Ann & the Holy Trinity Church. The event promises to be a gathering of community and connection, where individuals share personal narratives that inspire, move, and unite us. Details and tickets here.

Thursday, April 25th, 5pm - Virtual Community Rat Academy Training.  Join the BHA, Cobble Hill Association and Atlantic Avenue BID for a community training on rat mitigation led by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
