Street Safety Improvements in Our Area

 

Take a stroll down to Henry and Orange Streets and enjoy a safe and relaxing new crossing! We appreciate DOT's commitment to the safety of pedestrians in our neighborhood demonstrated by the installation of a new stop sign and crosswalk. DOT tells the BHA that this crossing will be updated to a traffic signal hopefully later this spring. 

DOT is currently conducting a traffic study to examine the possibility of an all-way stop at Hicks Street and Orange Street. The agency expects the study to be complete by the beginning of May. Stay tuned! 

In addition, earlier this week the DOT installed three midblock crosswalks on Atlantic Avenue between Smith Street and Nevins Street.  This traffic calming measure aims to slow down cars and enable pedestrians to nagivate the street safely. We applaud this positive step in addressing pedestrian safety concerns along this deadly corridor and continue to work alongside elected officials and other neighborhood groups for additional Atlantic Avenue safety improvements.

Let’s design an amazing public space in the heart of Brooklyn’s civic center!

DOT's Plan for BQE Central Rejected by Feds

We broke this news in last week's newsletter but in case you missed it, USDOT did not provide funding for NYDOT's  "BQE Central" grant application. This $800 million ask would have directed federal funding towards what we believe is a wrong-headed plan to enshrine the BQE in our borough for the next 100 years. 

We continue to urge policymakers at every level of government to pursue a holistic, corridor-wide plan that aligns with our climate goals, prioritizes transit and livable communities, and looks to the future of our city not the past. Join the Promenade Gardens Conservancy, Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Adrian Benepe and Landmarks Preservation Commissioner Fred Bland on Monday, March 11th at 6:30pm as we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Promenade Gardens Conservancy.

What is the PGC? In 2009, the Brooklyn Heights Association and the Department of Parks and Recreation formed a Public-Private Partnership called the Promenade Garden Conservancy to fund a dedicated professional gardener to maintain the 1/3mile-long ribbon of park that borders the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.

The Perennial Party is a chance to celebrate this partnership with drinks, light bites and climate-forward conversation. All funds raised will support the work of the PCG to beautify and maintain some of Brooklyn Heights's most beloved green space.
