Dear Brooklyn Heights Community - Despite all our hopes, wishes, and the responsible and conscientious behavior of most of us, it seems the dreaded "second wave" of the coronavirus pandemic is upon us. Although this is unwelcome news, we must face it with the same resolve and spirit of resilience we did last spring. Thankfully, the numbers in our neighborhood remain relatively low so far - with the latest data published by the city indicating a positivity rate of .96% in the 11201 zip code. However, we cannot become complacent and we must recommit ourselves to the same actions that helped us flatten the curve earlier this year.
What can you do? 1) Continue wearing your mask, wash your hands frequently, practice physical distancing, and avoid unnecessary risks of exposure as much as possible. 2) Download COVID Alert NY to your phone. COVID Alert NY is a voluntary, anonymous, exposure-notification smartphone app. You will get an alert if you were in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Knowing about a potential exposure allows you to self-quarantine immediately, get tested and reduce the potential exposure risk to your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and others. The more people who download COVID Alert NY, the more effective it will be. 3) Continue to support small, local businesses. Let a local restaurant or caterer prepare your Thanksgiving dinner or pies this year. If your finances allow, order a centerpiece or bouquet from one of our amazing local florists (you don’t need to be hosting a big gathering to appreciate the beauty of flowers.) If you’ve already started to shop for holiday gifts, make as many of those purchases from local boutiques and merchants as possible, or give a gift card redeemable at a local store, salon, or fitness studio. 4) Keep reaching out to neighbors, the elderly, and friends. As the pandemic drags on, supporting the mental health of our community remains critical. Sometimes all it takes is a text message to share your favorite meme or some silly emojis to brighten someone's day. Yours in health, Lara |
