Tree Bed Maintenance

Our trees need some TLC before winter!

After many successful events in the warmer weather (see photo), we are partnering with Council Member Restler and Big Reuse to give our trees some love as they brace for the colder months! We will be cleaning any refuse out of tree beds, weeding, cultivating soil with compost or mulch, and sweeping around tree beds. Please wear closed toed shoes and comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather.

Hillside Dog Park Cleanup and Playdate!

Join Friends of Hillside Dog Park for their 2nd fun-filled Bark in the Park! Pet parents and their furry partners will join forces to help make our beloved dog park even more beautiful. Scavenger hunt included!

Montague & Remsen Street Paving

Heads up that DOT has alerted us that Remsen Street between Clinton and Court Street will be paved this Friday evening into Monday morning, Nov 17/18. Please do not park on this block between Friday Nov 17th at 6pm-Saturday Nov 18th at 6am. Note: rain may delay this work.

Montague Street is scheduled to get its new coat of asphalt this coming Monday, November 20th. If your car is parked on blocks designated for paving, please be on the lookout for DOT posted signs alerting when cars need to be moved.

Missing Mailboxes

Have you noticed some United States Postal Service mailboxes have disappeared? So have we!

The BHA reported this mystery earlier this week to Rep. Dan Goldman's office, and we have learned that the USPS removed these collection boxes due to recent mail theft and tampering related incidents. Unfortunately, these boxes will not be replaced.

However, USPS has assured us that there are secure mailboxes located within a 1-3 block range for each of the boxes removed. Please email the BHA if you would like a complete list.

BQE Quick Updates - WIM is here!

The DOT's construction season is about to wrap up, which means the interim repair work on the Triple Cantilever of the BQE will too. Work will resume in the spring. DOT is planning an additional full weekend closure at that time. We will keep you posted on the date once it is announced.

In addition, thanks to the efforts of Assembly Member Simon and Senator Gournardes, and community organizations including the BHA, the long-awaited Weigh-In-Motion technology has been implemented on the Queens-bound side of the BQE. As of Monday, the warning period ended, and overweight trucks will now receive automatic fines.

DOT has reported a reduction in illegally overweight trucks over the warning period - and we hope that the fines will continue to be a strong deterrent.

Tickets are on sale now, with limited free and discounted admission available to local residents throughout the season. Reserving tickets online is recommended.

84th Community Council Meeting

84th Precinct Community Council Meeting | Tuesday, Nov 21st, 6:45pm pizza, 7pm meeting start | Brooklyn Borough Hall (enter on Joralemon Street). This is a great opportunity to meet the members of the precinct and discuss any safety issues on your mind.

Donate a new or gently used coat. The BHA is a collection site for New York Cares Annual Coat drive. Please bring a new or gently used coat to our office (55 Pierrepont St, 2nd floor, turn right off the elevators). Coats will be collected during the following times through Thursday, December 12th:

Mondays: 11am - 2pm

Wednesdays: 10am - 1pm (except 11/22)

Thursdays: 1pm - 4pm (except 11/23 )

Let the tree lightings begin! Atlantic Avenue Tree Lighting Ceremony is this Tuesday, Nov 21st, 6PM at St. Cyril of Turov Belarusian Church, 401 Atlantic Avenue. Join Senator Chuck Schumer, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon and Councilmember Lincoln Restler plus the Girl Scouts Troops 2133 and 2518 for this annual event to kick off the holiday season!

P.S. - We are awaiting details on the Brooklyn Heights Tree Lighting on the Promenade. We will share that as soon as we hear!

We are so excited to welcome Poppy's to Brooklyn Heights! After much success in Carrol Gardens, owner and local mom, Jamie Erickson, decided to open a 2nd location in the space formerly occupied by local favorite, Cranberries.
