Open Streets, Composting and a Changing of the Gard-ner
 

Join us this Saturday, September 30th at Montague Open Streets.  Entertainment by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Curtis Widem the Free Art Dude, and Hype Dance Community 

While there is lots of programmed fun, we also encourage you to use the day to take care of your health and the health of others! Lung cancer screenings and the New York Blood Center mobile will be on Montague near Clinton Street. Only 8 slots are left to donate blood.  NYC is facing a blood emergency.  While all blood types are needed, O+, O- and B- are critically low.  Please considering donating this Saturday

Don't forget to stop by the BHA table and say hi to us and enjoy the Cocktail Co-op, located at the corner of Henry and Montague. Grab a beverage from any business on Montague and sip it in our new 21+ gathering space. 

Parking: If your car is parked on Montague Street between Clinton and Hicks Street, please move it by 10AM Saturday so that we can all enjoy this day.

October 7th - Pickleball

Love pickleball?  Want to learn how to play pickleball? Everyone is welcome to play on one of the 3 temporary regulation courts that we're bringing to Montague Street from 12-5pm.

Bring your paddles and a partner or borrow our paddles and make a new friend! 

While we welcome players of all abilities, pickleball on Montague is best for people 12 years and older.

October 14 - Dogs Day

The dogs are howling with anticipation for our 2nd annual Dog Days on Montague! 

Bring your canine friend to try out an agility course, frolic in the dogs pools, get photographed with your BFF, and more! 

Volunteers from Hillside and Adam Yauch dog parks will be around - learn how you can support them.
 
Mandatory Composting Begins Monday!

Starting October 2nd, Brooklynites will set their compost at the curb just like their regular garbage and recycling. 

This program enables all of us to help combat climate change by limiting methane gas emissions caused when organic matter is sent to the landfills. Sorting out this waste will also cut off the food supply of our rodent enemies and hopefully reduce the city’s rat population.

Read all about NYC's compost program in the Brooklyn Paper and, if you don't have one already, order a free brown compost bin (by October 13th!). 

And remember - what goes around, comes around.  You can get up to two 40-pound bags of free, high-quality Big Apple Compost made from your food scraps and yard waste this Sunday October 1st at Cadman Park.  Sign up here!
 
Get Ready for a Frightful Night on October 19th

Nestled amongst the quiet streets of Brooklyn Heights, there lies local spirits, subterranean spectres, and the the phantoms of the Brooklyn Theatre Fire. 

Join the BHA and Boroughs of the Dead for a Haunted Brooklyn Heights Tour on Thursday, October 19th at 7pm. Spaces are very limited!

Atlantic Antic is this Sunday!

In case you haven't heard, Brooklyn's largest street festival is back for the 48th annual Atlantic Antic!  Come down this Sunday, October 1st from 12pm-6pm - enjoy a mile of food, drinks and wares and be sure to stop by the BHA table!  We will be on the north side of Atlantic Avenue between Henry and Clinton Street (near Brado Pizza.)  We would love to meet you!

Welcome Jessica!

We are sad, but not surprised, that Anil Chandrakumar, the Promenade Garden Conservancy's fearless leader, has received a very well-deserved promotion and is moving on to even greener pastures. 

Anil has been a treasure for our volunteers on the Promenade and at Cadman Park, both in the work he has accomplished, but perhaps more so, for the caring and love of all things gardening that he has inspired in everyone who meets him. We wish Anil the best in what, we are sure, will be a very bright future!

We are nevertheless very excited to welcome Jessica Kulig as the next Promenade Gardener and volunteer coordinator for the PGC. Jessica brings a warmth and excitement that we are sure will continue to spread joy to the volunteer gardeners across our community. Say hi to Jessica if you see her around the neighborhood! 
 
Share Your Noise Complaints with the FAA

In response to nationwide complaints about aviation noise, the FAA is seeking public comments describing individuals' lived experiences with all types of aircraft noise, including helicopters.

The deadline to comment is Friday, September 29 at 11:59pm ET. 

The FAA states that “a constructive, information-rich comment that clearly communicates and supports its claims is more likely to have an impact on regulatory decision making.” 

Information such as types and number of flights; times of day of flights; flight frequency are very helpful.  Be sure to describe the specific impacts on you, your family, and your neighborhood.
