Dog Waste Composting at Hillside has Begun!

Do you know that dog poop thrown in the trash has significant impacts on our climate? Gothamist recently published a story about this problem, and Brooklyn Height's own Friends of Hillside Dog Park took notice. After a few months of research and preparation, Hillside is now an active compost site.

No more poop bags! Even those that say "compostable" are a no no. When your dog poops at the dog park, simply grab some brown paper or a pooper scooper located at the north entrance to the park, and deposit it in the green container (see picture below). Our Friends at Hillside will do the rest!

Final Open Streets of the Summer - Resuming in September

Come over to Montague Street this Saturday July 29th from 12-5pm for a final car-free day of the summer.

Visit Books are Magic for their Graphic Fest, dine at Mad for Chicken where kids eat free, shop at Brooklyn Poets' swag sale, walk through Montague Street Blooms, try som Georgian wine at newly-opened Chama Mamma and visit the many other businesses on the block.

Open Streets will return on Saturday September 9th through Saturday October 28th with a huge array of events and activities.

One very important initiative is a blood drive on September 30th. As you may know, there is a critical need for blood donations in New York City. We are partnering with the Montague BID and City Council Member Lincoln Restler on this initiative and we need 50 people to sign up in order for the The New York Blood Center Mobile Donation Van to come. Pierrepont Playground Update

As you may have noticed, areas of Pierrepont Playground have been closed off for the past week due to a bee infestation and some structural repairs needed on the swings.

We are happy to share that our partners at NYC Parks have re-installed the swings and they are ready for action! The play area has been treated for bees but there are still some lingering critters, so the area will remain closed off until Parks can return in the next few days.

With only one exterminator for the entire borough and it being the height of bee season, the department is working hard to address all areas in need. We appreciate your patience as they ensure the area is safe for our children to play.

August 1st is National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships. Come down to the Pier 5 Picnic area starting at 4:30pm next Tuesday, August 1st and join the BHA, the 84th Precinct and our elected officials for free food, snacks and entertainment.

Transportation provided to the disabled and elderly by the 84th Precinct. Call (718) 875-6850 to reserve your seat three (3) days in advance of the event.
