As NYC Streetsblog put it in this just published article, "The City May Restore BQE to 6 Full Lanes of Nastiness."
As we reported to you over the weekend, there is good reason to believe that the DOT wants to bring back the full six lane configuration for BQE Central, against the recommendations of the 2020 BQE Expert Panel Report and the NY City Council's Future of the BQE report which said: "As we plan for and rebuild this corridor, we should work to right-size it for our future needs and citywide goals – including improving the public realm and reducing our reliance on individual car use. We need realistic pathways to reduce the number of trips on the BQE and make those trips that remain more efficient. In addition to the benefits this would have for air quality, noise, and street safety, a smaller roadway will make this project less complicated and expensive to build and maintain." And, in the transportation planning world, it is far from a secret that building bigger roads actually make traffic worse. Tonight is our opportunity to tell the city that the future of the highway must be forward looking and responsive to our current and future needs, and not a re-build of yesterday's misbegotten plans.
