Citi Bike Grows in Brooklyn
 

No, it’s not your imagination – more and more people are riding bikes in New York City, and the demand for Citi Bike usage has skyrocketed. To meet the increased demand, the Mayor, DOT, and Lyft announced a five-year expansion of the Citi Bike program to double the size of the service area and increase the system fleet to 40,000 bicycles.

Following expansion along the L-train corridor in Brooklyn and Queens and a long-awaited expansion into Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx, it’s now our turn here in Community Board 2 to receive additional docks. Over the next few weeks, DOT plans to install an additional 618 docks at 28 existing bike stations in Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Fort Greene, the Navy Yard and Boerum Hill. New parking regulation signs have been installed by DOT in preparation for the expanded docking stations. See above map and table below for exact locations. DOT told CB 2 that it has no plans to relocate any of these docking stations and any station that could have been placed on a sidewalk was installed there. While each location is unique it is possible that on-street parking will be reduced to create space for the larger docking station. The benefit is an expansion of a fast, healthy, and affordable transportation alternative.

HICKS STREET REPAVING NEXT WEEK

Hicks Street, from Atlantic Avenue to the BQE exit ramp, is scheduled to be repaved next Tuesday & Wednesday, Aug 18 & 19.  Vehicles left on the street when work is ready to be performed will be relocated, generally within three blocks. DOT encourages owners of relocated vehicles to first walk around the neighborhood.

If owners are not able to locate their vehicle, they may telephone their local precinct to learn where it was towed to.

Updates on #SAVEOURCOMPOST

In early May, the Department of Sanitation suspended its brown bin collection program in the wake of COVID-19 and associated service and budget cuts. 

Although the City Council recently restored $2.86 million for community composting programs this amount falls far short of restoring all programs. Ecology-minded community members and organizations are trying to fill in the gaps by opening grassroots drop-off sites at various locations that can be relied on until full funding can be restored. Vinegar Hill and Gowanus appear to be the closest sites to Brooklyn Heights.

Sending a thank you to all the residents who reported downed trees and branches to 311 and the BHA. We were pleased to see NYC Parks respond quickly to these reports - especially given the huge volume of requests from across the City. 

PLEASE take a look at any tress on or around your home as branches are still falling in the Heights. Any potentially dangerous branch should be reported to 311 by phone or through the very easy to use phone app. Let's keep each other safe!
