Staying Informed We are fortunate to have several experienced international public health experts living in Brooklyn Heights. They confirm that the best sources of information during this time are the CDC and the City Of New York's COVID-19 websites. You can also sign up for text alerts from NYC Emergency Management - text "COVID" to 692-692. Supporting Small Business Yesterday the BHA participated in conference calls led by the NYC Department of Small Business Services and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to learn more about state and local efforts to support our small business community during this extremely difficult time. We are also in contact with our friends at the Montague and Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement Districts. On March 8, Mayor DeBlasio announced that the City will provide relief for small businesses seeing a reduction in revenue because of COVID-19. Businesses with fewer than 100 employees who have seen sales decreases of 25% or more will be eligible for zero interest loans of up to $75,000 to help mitigate losses in profit. In addition, the City is offering businesses with fewer than 5 employees a grant to cover 40% of payroll costs for two months to help retain employees. Learn more and apply here. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is also offering information and support to all businesses in Brooklyn impacted by the COVID-19 Crisis. Businesses should download The Brooklyn APP and Join the Small Business Hotline Under “Communities.” The BHA will work to get this information into the hands of local businesses who are not covered by the BIDs, but we encourage you to share this with any business owners you know. Many additional programs and supports, including rent freezes, tax relief, etc, are still being discussed at the state and local levels. How can you help now? Many businesses are offering gift certificates for purchase to be redeemed (or not!) once they are up and running again. Check the websites of your favorite businesses. The Restaurant Workers Community Foundation is accepting donations to its COVID-19 relief fund. There is a new initiative in New York City called Invisible Hands which connects people with opportunities to shop and perform other tasks for their neighbors. Explore options for virtual volunteering. The Points of Light Foundation has some ideas here. Mental Health Provided you remain at a safe distance from others, the Promenade, Cadman Park, and Brooklyn Bridge Park remain open and are good spots for deep breaths, fresh air and enjoying the early spring blossoms.
