BQE RECONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Groups Tell DOT: Environmental Harm Too Great

It’s been quite a few weeks.

First, having released our alternative proposal to the DOT’s destructive BQE reconstruction plans, we learned from Commissioner Trottenberg – though only through her response in the recent NY Times’ article - that DOT was finally saying it’s considering 4 -6 options. But NYCDOT has not been transparent about what those options are beyond their two original plans and the BHA alternative.

And second, we’ve now gained some prominent supporters with major historic preservation groups joining us in opposition to the City’s ill-conceived BQE reconstruction plans. The NY Landmarks Conservancy, the Historic Districts Council, the Preservation League of New York State, the City Club of New York, and the World Monuments Fund, along with the Dumbo Neighborhood Alliance and the Vinegar Hill Neighborhood Association, have sent a letter to NYCDOT, NYSDOT and the Federal Highway Administration to urge NYCDOT to go back to the drawing board and find an alternative that won’t “inflict severe environmental, social, and economic harm on the neighboring communities."

The BHA proudly stands with these groups and the tens of thousands of members they represent in united opposition to the City’s unacceptable BQE plans.
