BQE RECONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Flurry of Activity on DOT Plan

Posters by the BHA opposing the DOT plan for a 6-lane highway on the Promenade – the “Promenade Highway” -- are appearing throughout the Heights.  They are free and can be found at the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange at 55 Pierrepont Street.  Please pick one up and display it in a prominent place, and ask your friends, neighbors and local retailers to display them too!

Working together, the BHA and Save the Promenade (recently renamed A Better Way NYC) submitted Freedom of Information (FOIL) Requests to DOT this week to gain access to information that will help us persuade the City that the Promenade Highway makes no sense and alternatives can be devised that will be far preferable.

The October 26th meeting between the BHA and DOT was postponed to enable our elected officials and DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg to be present.  The BHA also met with Senators Kavanagh and Assemblymember Simon last week, and Councilmember Levin the week before, to apprise them of our activities, discuss alternative solutions, and explore what role the State and other agencies can and should play.

The media interest - print, radio and TV - in the neighborhood’s opposition to the DOT plan has been intense.  The Brooklyn Eagle, the Brooklyn Paper Radio (see "Heights Association brain trust on the destruction of the Promenade"), NY1, and News 12 recently covered the story, and the Wall Street Journal will have coverage in its November 6th issue.

The BHA is actively looking for and speaking with various technical consultants who can contribute to our efforts to evaluate other options and to assist in the analysis of environmental concerns.

Stay tuned for regular further updates. And please don’t forget to donate to the BHA’s BQE Fund, which will enable us to maintain the momentum we have established.  Our thanks to all of you who have already made a donation.
