Reconsidering Context: New Buildings in Old New York

The BHA is proud to co-sponsor a lecture and panel discussion on the issues surrounding “contextual development.” Leading architectural theorist Steven Semes will discuss his new book The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation

Steven Semes is the author of The Architecture of the Classical Interior (W. W. Norton & Co.) His essays and reviews have appeared in Traditional Building, Period Homes, American Arts Quarterly, and the National Trust Forum Journal. He is a Fellow Emeritus of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America and was educated at the University of Virginia and Columbia University.

Panelists:

Simeon Bankoff is the Executive Director of the Historic Districts Council. His work encompasses land use, zoning, affordable housing, and adaptive reuse, and, as a result, is at the forefront of New York City’s historic preservation movement.

Richard Cameron is a Principal at the design firm, Atelier & Co. Cameron is the co-founder of both the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and The Beaux-Arts Atelier, an educational platform for practicing architecture as a fine art. In 2013 he received The Arthur Ross Board of Directors Honor Award from the ICA&A.

Roberta Washington is the Principal of Roberta Washington Architects, PC, and a former Landmarks Preservation Commissioner.
