Special Election Will Be Held Early Next Year

Mayor de Blasio must announce the date of a special election to replace Letitia James as Public Advocate within three days of her assuming the office of NYS Attorney General on January 1st. The election will likely take place in mid-February and the winner will serve until December 31, 2019.  A new general election in November will determine who will fulfill the remainder of James’ current term through 2021.

A lengthy list of candidates is vying to be the next Public Advocate.  Any individual can participate in the election who secures sufficient signatures and files their ballot petition within 12 days of the Mayor’s announcement.

On Tuesday, December 18th at 7PM (doors open at 6:45 PM), a group of Brooklyn political clubs is sponsoring a Public Advocate’s forum at First Unitarian Church at 119 Pierrepont Street.

Ben Max, the Executive Editor of Gotham Gazette, and Alyssa Katz of the NY Daily News editorial board will moderate the forum. Following an introduction by the candidates, questions will be presented by the sponsoring political clubs.

Confirmed participants at the forum include: Michael Blake, Theo Chino, David Eisenbach, Rafael Espinal, Ifeoma Ike, Ron Kim, Nomiki Konst, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Daniel O’Donnell, Ydanis Rodriguez, Dawn Smalls, Jumaane Williams and Ben Yee.

Donate Today to the BHA’s Annual Appeal

Every year, the BHA sponsors an Annual Appeal to support its on-going advocacy on behalf of the Heights community.  This year, that advocacy is made all the more critical because of the BHA’s multi-faceted campaign to stop DOT’s 6-lane Promenade Highway.

With the assistance of Marc Wouters Studios and input from engineering firm, Nelson Nygaard, the BHA has presented DOT with a credible alternative.  While DOT is now reviewing that concept, we continue to challenge DOT to develop solutions that will not endanger the Heights’ historic fabric and the health of its residents.

Our efforts - engineering, legal and public relations – can only succeed with the community’s vigorous support.  There is still time to contribute to the BHA’s Annual Appeal online or by mail to: BHA, 55 Pierrepont Street, Box 17D, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Donors can also earmark their donation to the BQE Fund.

We thank all those who have donated already.
