Triple Cantilever Repairs & Long-Term Planning
In a meeting with community-based organizations and elected officials last week, NYC DOT presented its plans to temporarily extend the life of the triple cantilever and outlined moves to lay the groundwork for a long-term, community-driven vision for the highway. DOT’s current stated objectives are to extend the structural life and safety or the roadway, have a BQE with fewer, smaller, cleaner trucks and to reimagine the future of the entire BQE through community-based planning. We support these objectives, but as the saying goes, the devil is in the details! The BHA & the BQET will remain actively involved as the plan is implemented in the coming months. You can learn more at the upcoming CB2 Transportation and Public Safety Committee Meeting at which DOT will present its plan to the community. Please note: This meeting was originally scheduled for September 16 but will be rescheduled due to the Yom Kippur holiday. We will let the community know as soon as there is a new date and time. Weigh-In-Motion The bill to create a truck weight-enforcement system that measures the weight of a vehicle at normal speed and issues fines electronically, known as weigh-in-motion (WIM) has passed the NY Senate and Assembly. It is currently awaiting signature by Governor Hochul. The BQET will send a letter to the Governor urging her to quickly sign this important legislation. Congestion Pricing There may finally be some movement on congestion pricing, which has the potential to reduce traffic on the BQE and the strain on the triple cantilever. The MTA is holding a series of public meetings this month about the officially named Central Business District Tolling Program to hear your comments and concerns ahead of the federally mandated environmental assessment. Brooklynites can weigh in on September 23 & 30 – but you must register ahead of time to speak. Find all the registration details here. |
