The BHA is helping to circulate the online petition started by State Senator Daniel Squadron in a community based effort to have Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park included as an East River Ferry stop, when the ferry service becomes a permanent year-round service.
As you may know, the existing East River ferry service includes a stop at Pier 1, but it does not stop at Pier 6 (Atlantic Avenue). This service has been operating for 1 1/2 years as a pilot program, with ridership levels surpassing everyone's expectations. Now, the NYC Economic Development Corporation plans to extend the service, making it a permanent year-round transit option. This is a good idea!
The BHA supports the City's goal to strengthen and promote the ferry service as an alternative, sustainable and reliable means of transportation for the city, and we certainly favor bringing people to the waterfront and providing better access to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
But the proposal on the table does not include a stop at Pier 6. We think it should, and we hope you will agree. Please act now by signing the online petition here. The petition will be sent to the NYC EDC with a letter co-signed by all of our elected officials, Community Board 2, the BHA and our neighboring civic groups. Thank you!
